Formation of Abeokuta Golf Club

THE HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE OF ABEOKUTA GOLF CLUB
1. The piece of land known as Abeokuta Golf Vourse forms a part of the Ogun State Secretariat Complex; a large parcel of land acquired for public purpose at the inception of Ogun State in 1976
2. On January 24th 1987, Abeokuta Golf Club was formed with a pioneer executive headed by Col. Agunbiade Lawal as Club Captain. The Club’s primary objective was the promotion and development of the game of golf in Ogun State
3. The Government in trust, bequeathed this responsibility of developing and promoting the game of Golf in the State to Abeokuta Golf Club, a recreational and sporting association, whose first Captain, Col Agunbiade Lawal (now deceased) was the Brigade Comander, 32 Infantry Brigade, Nigerian Army and also the Vice-Chairman of the State Executive Council
Other pioneer members of the Golf Club include :
· Late Eng Ayo Obaseki – Zonal Director NEPA as Vice Captain
· Chief Wale Otesile – then MD OPIC as Financial Secretary/Treasurer
· Chief Tebun Fagbemi – then Commissioner for Local Govt and Chieftaincy Affairs
· Mr Segun Ogunseye (now Pastor Segun Oluwaseye) – a practisisng Estate Surveyor and Valuer as Secretary
· Chief Akin Akande a BusinessmanSurveyor Ayo Oresegun – then Principal Land, Ministry of Lands and Survey as Course OfficerConsidering the caliber of these men, the Government was persuaded that they were capable of defending this public trust
